Closing of Loaves & Fishes Christian Food Ministry

We at Allied Churches of Alamance County were saddened by the news of the abrupt closing of Loaves & Fishes Christian Food Ministry, but we were not shaken.

It is true that the needs of the poor and homeless in our community are vast, but Allied Churches is here, always ready, to lend a helping hand. Allied Churches plans to continue its mission to feed the hungry, house the homeless and nurture the poor through the many support services we offer to encourage self-sufficiency.

We are here. You can count on Allied Churches of Alamance County. You always could.

Allied Churches, in partnership with other agencies in Alamance County, won’t allow the poor to go hungry, but we do need your help -- now more than ever -- to ensure our community’s needs are covered.

Our Plan

Beginning Monday, Sept. 9, Allied Churches will open a food bank and offer two hot meals a day to anyone in need in addition to the other services we already provide.

Food Bank

  • Food distribution will take place from 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday at Allied Churches.
  • Food drop off, including canned goods and other dry, nonperishable items, will take place from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Hot Meals

Allied Churches has offered a lunchtime meal since its inception, and we will continue that service from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday in the Good Shepherd Kitchen. However, in an effort to help those in need make their food dollars stretch, we are adding an evening meal to our schedule. The Good Shepherd Kitchen will serve a second meal from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Throughout the years, our church partners have been so gracious in providing evening meals to our emergency shelter residents. While we anticipate that the numbers who sit down at our tables for supper will now increase -- and possibly double -- with this change, we hope we can still rely on your help.

What do we need?

As we prepare for these changes that will begin Sept. 9, we are asking for some immediate help. We need your time, talent and treasure, including the following:

  • Electricians
  • Plumbers
  • People with carpentry skills who can build shelves for a food pantry
  • Building supplies
  • Canned food and other dry, nonperishable items
  • Volunteers to assist with food distribution and collection
  • Groups willing to prepare and serve evening meals

With your tax deductible gift we also can continue to provide these and other services that are so desperately needed.

Will you help?  Please give as generously as you are able.
