David is married with three adult children. He’d like to have a close relationship with them, but knows he has some work ahead of him. Addiction drove him to make many poor choices in his life. He describes his childhood as a really good one, and has trouble pinpointing when things went wrong, though why they went wrong is clear to him. “I used to work, go out and make my money and stuff and the first thing I would do is go to the liquor store,” he remembers. “But I’m just going to leave that all to the past. Day by day. It’s getting better. It’s getting a whole lot better.”
While he hasn’t forgotten the past, David is focused on the present and future. He is staying at the Allied Churches homeless shelter, but he hopes not for long. “Hopefully I can get on up out of here and just move into my place and just don’t think about drugs or alcohol. I just want to do better.”
And he is doing better. He’s sober and is maintaining a job that he landed thanks to vocational rehabilitation. With each additional week of work, he gets closer to securing a home of his own.
